   Benarty 31st January

After a bit of aimless milling about in the car park Laurie finally 'led' us in a random motion towards the ... playpark!  Purpose eventually emerged out of chaos and we finally set sail for Benarty along the loch side. At the first stop in the woods Gordie metaphorically thrashed Alan for the serious offence of hijacking his leadership the year before. With Herr Gordie now firmly in control we proceeded to the road, turned left and then up a fine grassy track taking us up to the Benarty ridge. In cold clear conditions we followed the ridge west to the 'Lomie hollow' where Pat regaled us with his thoughts on the next Golden scarf - yipee! It was hard to contain our excitement at the prospect! Suddenly Herr Gordie sprang up and told us 'it's cold, lets go!' Feart, we followed!  Negotiating safely the threat of the electric fence to any 'dangly bits' we made it back to the main top and then enjoyed a pleasant run down to the cars. Back at the pub the only hiccup on a fine night was the Guinness running out.

The good news for next week is that the Kettle barmaid has ordered an extra barrel of the black and is going to have a wee treat for us! Joe and I have just reccied a new Kettle route and there are no fences to cross.

INDESCRIBABLE......A LOMIE EPIC!

Just remembered!  - Alan (literally) only just survived being savaged by a dead sheep! He was trotting along a trod when he felt a searing pain in his ankle. He looked down with surprise to find that a sheep's skull lying on the trod had sprung up and embedded it's teeth in his ankle!

It is possible that some folk might not believe this story but the whole thing was witnessed by Jean! The epic nature of the evening becomes apparent when I realised I had forgotten to mention this unusual incident.

   Strathmiglo -  Tues 10th Jan

Ancient Chinese proverb - a chicken with one head knows where its going; a chicken with three heads hasn't a bloody clue!

After the uncounted throng had gathered at the Strath hall the first head honcho, David, led us ( from the rear) up to the top track. He was sacked on the spot.

Second head honcho, Gordie, stepped into the breach and pointed up into the trees, "lets go that way". He had forgotten that a few days before we had had the worst storm for thirty years.  If there were any trees still standing I didn't see them. After several hours we reached the moor. Gordon got sacked.

Then things really went pear shaped. We proceeded towards west Lomond. The now unnamed third leader took the party along the tiny track above the crags - yes the same crags that a Fife runner fell over in daylight. Meanwhile, Alan, the only person that knew the new Lomond's route had been left behind. Nipping up to the top track he was able to go from last place to first place and reach the top of the gully in time to welcome the others.

Matters took a turn for the better now when leader three was also sacked and we reached the top of West Lomond without further incident. (apart from David discovering later that he'd lost his car keys) We returned to the Strath by the traverse round into the woods and back down the track.

   Falkland 3rd Jan 2012

It was a spectacular start to 2012 when Scotland awoke to Hurricanes but when the going gets tough the Lomies get going! Somehow two parties of Lomies  missed each other for the 11 am set off in Falkland.

Adrian, Louise, Jenny, Ross and Emma headed up towards the East but missed the fun at the top when Addie and Ross led the three maidens along to Maidens (sorry about that one!) and down to Monument.

Alan David Marcus and Laurie made the top (twice) and arrived at the top like three year olds in the playground, jumping, whooping, falling about and flying around in the hurricane blast at the top. Marcus grew an extra arm (see pic) and Alan was saved by grabbing the trig as he flew east at high speed.  We continued on down Maspie where the way was blocked by a splintered carnage of smashed up trees.

And then there was Pat ......  who survived his solo, unaided crossing of the Lomonds to the Tavern - but that's another story!

Alan

   Creag Mead  Tues 27th Dec

We gathered in fine festive fettle on a mild winter interlude between the gales. A breather on the Maiden allowed Aidy to catch up and then we descended to the forest track. At the end of the woods we confronted the 'hillbillies' and stopped briefly for some amiable banter. The long steep climb to the gully burnt off quite a few mince pies and  a wander round the base of the hill took us up to join the mobs at the top of the West. After photies Derek won the 'King of the Yeehas' down the hill. The day was rounded off very pleasantly with lunch down at the Lomie Tav where Santa Pat arrived bearing gifts.

   Falkland  Tues 20th Dec

There was a bit of a seasonable party spirit about on a fine night with Tatra veteran John looking as if his PTSD (Post Tatra stress disorder) counselling has worked well! We also welcomed Paula back along with Ross and Jenny who must have enjoyed last weeks fun. We finally got going a bit late (serial latecomers will be named and shamed soon!) with the ever expanding Lomie caravan (Falkland may become the UFO capital of Scotland!) trundling up the steep side of East Lomond to the summit (where Brian appeared). We then descended to the steps (picking up Pat and Laurie on the way) and back up the dyke to the mast. The icy track round the back of the hill took us along to the  stile and back to the summit via the 'craters'. It was good to have a quiet night for a change!

  Benarty  Tues 13th Dec

On a night when the Tay bridge was closed and normal folk were feart to leave the house the Lomond Lunatics were gathering for fresh air (lots of it!) and fun. What a sight we looked! - all swathed in extra layers, Postman Pat only missing his mail bag and Gus's legs cowering under his tights! A heads down struggle along to Vane farm into the gale gave us a taste of things to come then a zigzag up to the top of the reserve and a clamber up a steep rocky slope pitched us into the teeth of the gale.

Luckily the route is simple, along a grassy trod, but by the time Pat and I made the summit the rest were huddled like Penguins in a blizzard. The return along the plateaux, with the wind at our backs, was a 'blast' but further down the cattle had churned up the fields into an ankle-breaking, Postman-swallowing (I've fallen into a F** B** B**!) morass. We were right to feel chuffed with ourselves as we sat supping in the comfort of the 'Well'.

Holl reservoir Tues 6th Dec

The night's main entertainment occurred just as we were ready to set off. What we assumed was a boy racer shot round the corner, lost control and hammered into the fence - it was Brian in a courtesy car that was due back tomorrow. With Gordie getting itchy feet we opted for West Lomond and apart from Joe leading us back down to the Reservoir at one point all went without incident on a snowy night. We are doing well at staying together now but the bad old days of losing people seemed more fun. At the top we celebrated Rosie's 105th birthday - Laurie is convinced its a treat for the old lady!

   Formonthills  Tues 29th Nov

For some, finding the Balgeddie Hotel was the toughest part of this run (and with only 8 of us making it compared to last weeks 18 half the club might still be lost in the maze of 'roundabout town'. With some wild weather promised our blizzard bag finally made it onto the hill (it would just about fit round Jabbers and Frasers bare legs). Joe's encyclopaedic local path knowledge took us up the the trig above F'hills and then Al, with Google earth bird's view imprinted on his brain, led the magnificent seven unerringly to the radio mast. Oz now took over with a detour along the path to the gate, past the 'bomb craters' where the biting wind blew us up the backside of the East. So far it was a cracking clear starry winters night. After a brief sit down in  the lee of the summit we decided to descend by the Pitcairn path where we came upon the 'caped crusader' (Paddy). Then it got nasty - very nasty! Wind, rain, sleet, mud. Joe led us back by paths which seemed to go on for ever and proved repeatedly that the shortest distance between two points is never a straight line. Guinness has never tasted so good!

   Pitmedden  Tues 22nd Nov

The mad mob assembled at the Psycho Tavern. We welcomed Jenny who was described as being a whippet (her running abilities of course!) and after a stop for the dog lovers to moon over Fraser's four legged 'baby' we followed Joe who seemed to be our only chance of not getting lost in the forest. The advance party made it to the the Common where the latecomers (named and shamed as Refill, Hot-tub and Deek (sporting a massive bandage on his finger -don't ask but he'll tell you what he can't do with it!)  caught up. Across the road and into the maze of Pitmedden where we had an amiable amble along endless wee tracks with frequent stops to avoid losing anyone. Few of us had a clue where we were but eventually we popped out on the road and raced down to the black liquid delights of the Tavern.

   Creag Mead  Tues 15th Nov

It was Alan that stepped forward with a cunning plan tonight - down first then back up! Welcome back Laurie from his Omland nightmare and Lisa who must have enjoyed her run last week! At Alan's pace (no-one got left behind!) a round dozen of us disappeared into the trees and eventually reappeared at the monument. After our 'comfort stop' we slid down to the wee track which leads to the forestry road below. We were now onto the new Lomonds route in reverse which gave us a steady run along to the open hill. A steep ascending traverse led up the interminable grassy slopes to the rocky gully. From the top we followed trods round the bog and up the final slopes to the top of the West. Yet another sit down and then Derek led a great yeeha down to the track. Steady back along to the car park and down to our favourite watering hole.

   Glen Vale  Tues 8th Nov

A healthy eleven appeared on a murky night with Joe elected as leader. Having decided that his dog had struggled last time Tim thought he would see if his better half Lisa fared any better! Our new resolve not to lose anyone worked well as we jogged up to the Pulpit. The wee cut off of the Burden's route was missed in the dark so we continued up the muddy main track to the dyke. At the stile we turned left, entered the clag and were soon on the steep climb up West Lomond. The photies at the top suggest that Tim and Lisa were enjoying themselves most! From the top the track was followed round to the easy gully and then we bypassed the Bannet Stane to return through the woods. A fine night. Eleven returned - well done to all!

   Scotlandwell Tues 1st Nov

It was a fine night for a run but apart from Adrian our OMMers were notable by their absence - blisters, chaffing - you really don't want to know where but back in the pub later David showed us chaffing in places that most of us don't even have places! and a few cases of 'Comrie belly'. We mustered a round dozen and welcomed Trish who had been forewarned about what to expect but nothing could have prepared her for the apparition of our own missing member of 'the Goons' dressed in a cycling cape with an illuminated red 'willie' on his nose and a cardboard wind turbine strapped to his back. Thankfully he didn't run with us and disappeared up the hill with limping Laurie to frighten the sheep.  The saner members enjoyed a varied route on a magnificent clear night to the top of the Bishop and round a loop through 'Apache country'. Ironically our one surviving OMMer Addie dropped out with a twisted ankle. In places the cattle had turned the route into a bogin' version of no-mans land on the Somme.  Jean was happy with her ye-ha descent to Kinnesswood and then a Tetley trot back to the Well. Trish acquitted herself well on what was a long rough winters run. Some good crack about the OMM and forthcoming events rounded off a great night.

   Falkland  25th October

With an early return needed for the AGM David led our rag-tag party off through the estate and up into Maspie. Cutting up to the road we realised that Gus and Jean had gone astray. The remainder of us reached the T wood and up the steep side of Falkland hill. With a little time to spare we descended towards the limekiln to meet G and J on their way up. Alan accompanied them back over the top with the rest cutting back round the side of the hill.

The AGM and The return of the PINK PANTHER

The Lomond Tavern did us proud with a big table for 20 ready and we were soon tucking into groaning platters of delicious food (fattening up the OMMers). For the main highlights of the meeting see the EVENTS page. As outgoing President Donald delivered an excellent speech and performed the amazing feat of finding something nice to say about all the members! For those that hadn't seen the Lomies in action before all the rumours about our sanity must have been confirmed. With the AGM over Paddy swung into action and scarf prizes were awarded (in reverse order!) with Pat third, Laurie second and the man in pink himself, Gordie, taking the supreme prize. A memorable moment ensued when we celebrated our sporting superstar with a spontaneous 'doing the Gordie' jig. Finally the new ladies golden scarf was awarded to a very deserving Jean. Well done to Pat for all his work in our second run of the scarf.

    Benarty Tues 18th Oct

It felt like winter trying to keep warm in the car park, particularly for the hardy few still in shorts.  Pat amazed us by producing a torch even weaker than last weeks effort. Up in the trees we got a bit confused when we entered a field with cattle and had to retreat with the dogs. Oblivious,Alan motored off down the track spoiling Gordie's chance to lead us up his 'favourite wee hill'. Across the road we followed the new steps through the trees up the backside of Benarty and then we were onto the wee track across the moor. From the summit its a brilliant run along the narrow ridge to our little hollow at the west end. We returned by the same route to reach the cars in a long 1hr50.

Laurie's 'like it or lump it'  Bishophill run     Tues 11th Oct

Mr Refill must be running out of ideas! - we did the normal trot up to White Craig and then Laurie took us on the grand tour of all the 'lumps' on the plateaux. "Look, there's a lump - did you like it? No - look there's another lump!" On a fine night it was fun but its a good place to lose someone on a murky night. Subtle hint, Pat - an increase in your candlepower by about a thousand would make things easier! All safely back at White Craig we spotted the torchlit spectral figure of  Fraser loping across the moor below. Laurie led the rest of us down a sketchy path through the steep bracken to the Tetley trail. Pat became detached and we watched - with concern - his minute red twinkle wobbling through the undergrowth accompanied by tirades of cursing. An excellent gathering at the 'Well' rounded off an entertaining night.

The 'not very sure where we were' run   Oct 4th

Miraculously we all found the revised meeting point at the Gilvenbank hotel in Glenrothes. Joe led us off up some fine trails to Coull and then up the East Lomond track. So good so far - then darkness fell! Joe led us off onto the darkness and we explored various fields all separated by barbed wire fences. I lost count! Jean was fair chuffed that she only had to deploy her 'air-bags' once! The farmyard ankle deep in manure was one highlight I'd rather forget. We found a path to Rhynd hill and a burn crossing took us to Formonthills and the way home. Well done Joe!

    The Tatra trot

The 'Lomie cultural exchange to Poland' have safely returned (just!). We all made it to the top of Rysy, the highpoint of the Polish Tatra with plenty of chain dangling and Jabbers declaring he had never seen better 'scenery'. A few of us hankered after last years mint tea but with beer at a quid who's complaining!

   Falkland 20th Sept

A great throng of Lomies, hingers on and random dogs headed up into Maspie and promptly lost each other. Somehow we all ( well, nearly all!) made it to the monument where we took some silly photos. We carried on to the Maiden castle where we enjoyed the superb sunset. Alan led the 'cross country' route to East Lomond - why go the easy way - and some are training for the OM!  Having arrived late Fraser and Stephen joined us on the top of Falkland hill and then we chased the light down to the village. With the trip to Poland imminent Jabbers was in full flight promising us all sorts of 'fun' involving women, vodka and cabbage and we rehearsed the Polish for 'eight beers please!' It was good to see Adrian back from his honeymoon - but there seemed to be an awful lot of running taking place!! and David was a bit bemused by Pats gift of volume three of the 'build the HMS Hood' magazine???    Glen Vale  13th Sept

For the second week running we headed up to the Pulpit but this time  on the Glen Vale track. We gathered on the grass below the crags to let latecomers catch up. A race across the burn and up the steep sandy bank took us back to the regular relay races we held in years past (and ended when the two ladies taking the last leg crashed into the burn!) We continued straight up and across in the mist to the top of the Bishop. I think it was Gordie that suggested the direct route down across the moor - not too clever when the cattle had been down before us! With the light fading it was obvious that the head torches would be in use soon. On the way down to Gateside we were surprised to pass Jean and Jennifer who had arrived late and headed up West Lomond.

Still on a post Ben high the jolly joggers clogged up the wee car park on a murky night but the rain stopped on cue and we set off up to the Bannet stane and through the trees to traverse round on trods to the pulpit.    Collace 30th August

The Lomie mob gathered below Dunsinane for what Andy declared his favourite run and we welcomed first timer Marcus who showed he was well able to keep up. Certainly, poised between the highlands and Fife, the views from Schiehallion to the Lomonds were stunning on this fine Autumnal night. Its not a long run, but with deep heather and elusive trods the run out over Black hill and King's Seat and back is tough enough for a pre-Ben wind down  At our summit sprawl Brian made a 'once in a lifetime' offer of a prenuptial 'sausage supper' to Adrian who reluctantly refused (see pic). (it might have been in jest!)  On the way back we rescued two sorry souls lost in the heather (Jabbers and Mr refill).

Meanwhile - reports have reached us of a secret training camp deep in the Lomond hills run by the 'The Dentist' or 'the Wizard of Oz'. One of our undercover operatives has penetrated the cell and reports a small group of agents being trained to the point of exhaustion for an imminent assault on the 'Ben'. Promises of copious amounts of a black 'health' drink and 'nocturnal activities' are used by the 'Dentist' to bribe his unsuspecting mountain guerrillas.

    Foul-Tea Towers, Birnam  23rd August

Before the run we enjoyed watching Adie, Laurie and Jabbers manoeuvring a massive gas cooker down the stairs. With Derek on the downside a stumble would have ended his hopes for a Connochie plaque and left a nasty red stain on the carpet! Injured, Gordie set off to walk up the hill with the rest of us heading up to inspect the new cairn on Birnam hill. Very impressive but who is paying for it? Alan and Shaun continued down the backside and round to Birnam while the rest disappeared into the heather towards Obney hill. With slightly better eyesight we might have picked out David leading his merry men up and down Falkland hill in the belief that it will improve their Ben times.

Back in the pub Shaun, Gordie and I forced down some flat Guinness (but money off!) with the rest appearing just as the light was fading. With the clock ticking for Adie his imminent 'staggie' in Skye was the main topic of conversation.

     Chain Walk  16th August

Our annual dangling from chains has become a favourite outing. A record number of Lomies gathered on a fair night at the Lower Largo's Temple car park. With the tide heading in the right direction we jogged along the waters edge to Shell bay. A climb round Kincraig point took us round to the start of the chain walk. Its great fun clambering up and down the chains with the chance of a swim if you slip. We all made it safely across and then we had a knee deep splash across the burn before the long run back along the miles of curving beach. With dark clouds threatening ahead we made it to the cars just as the heavens opened.

    Training update from 'chocoman'

more "off season" training. This photo taken just after leaving Barra hospital following a "how to bite through your lip by smashing it against a rock" training session. Highly effective. 4 stitches, 2 remodelled teeth, which are also slightly relocated. Root canal surgery beckons!

Still, I thoroughly enjoyed drinking fine whisky through a straw..... along with Ale, Cider, Port, Red Wine, White Wine, Guinness, and Lager. All in all a very healthy holiday.

   Dollar 9th August

An 'august' gathering from Blairgowrie to Burntisland jammed the wee car park at the foot of the Glen. With Gordies feet itchy, the main party set off with Alan and Richard taking up the rear. We split half way up with Alan leading a breakaway up the interesting humps and hollows on the east side of Kings seat. We joined up at the summit on a fine crystal clear night and then realised there was no sign of Gus. Jean appeared unperturbed! Much hilarity ensued when Gus appeared from the opposite direction?? The main group sped off towards the Burn of Sorrow (Jabbers idea of running heaven!) with the retired section returning down the main path. Fine crack ensued in the Kings seat with discussion about the forthcoming Lomonds race and Laurie giving details of a spectacular 'Gaudi' house for rent in Zakopane but the bit in the description about "we hope you enjoy the intercourse with her" may have been lost in translation!

    Auchterhouse  2nd August

With injuries, holidays etc only a small group of diehards made it to the preferred venue - a brief report please

I ended up joining a motley crew of calendar 'refusniks' at Falkland for a 'local'. There was a bit of a holiday feel about the run as we trundled up the hill path to East Lomond with frequent stops for for chat. Up at the top, with cloud and sun breaking through we lingered in the hope of seeing Brocken Spectres but then David led us down to the mast, round the back of the hill and back up to the summit. Then, thirsty we tumbled down the track to the Tavern.

  Craig Rossie  26th July

For most a new venue. Brian appeared at the last minute again - try a faster car Brian! On a superb eve Alan (with Mr Refill away touring fife) led up past the quarry and up the slopes of Ben Effrey. A plunge down a dark firebreak and a forestry road led us to a messy burn crossing. The open grassy break called the Slack took us up to the screes and summit of Rossie law on the left. Great views. Back to the forestry road and down down down until we turned left for a long climb led up through all the fascinating landslips below the crags of Craig Rossie. After a bask in the late evening sun we bounded down the grassy slopes to the cars and on to enjoy the fine ales and chat in the great pub in Dunning.

Now we know what happened to the lost legion - the midges got them! The bloodthirsty beasties drove us back to the cars until all were ready. Once we got going they gave up the chase and we enjoyed a soggy jog across the dam and up the track on the south side of Glen Sherup. Addie persuaded us to continue on round to Tarmangie and the along to Innerdouny. A cut through the trees took us back to the track and thankfully the midges had gone to bed when we reached the cars. Adrian very kindly pulled out a box of soggy used clothes (Louise must be spring cleaning) including a few pairs of Y-fronts.  Although Gordies eyes lit up at the prospect of upgrading his wardrobe the rest of us resisted. Spirits were high back at the Muchart Inn. We chatted about our forthcoming trip to Zakopane where someone had discovered a pole-dancing club - it occurred to me later that of course Poles would be dancing in the pub???

   Scotlandwell  5th July

It felt good to get back to familiar haunts  and even our friendly barmaid greeted us at the door of the 'Well' - "where have you lot been? You'll just have to wait - I'm going to finish my fag first!"  We all felt a bit laid back and set off for a gentle daunder across to the top of the Bishop. David gave us the lowdown on meeting Prince Phil at the Palace ('he's not bad for 90 you know!' David said. Well why didn't you sign him up David?) David made it clear his roving eye had been trained elsewhere! (something about tottie???)  After a long stop at the top lazybones Adrian suggested the direct route back. Half way across the moor we spotted the unmistakable silhouette of Wolfman and Rosie trotting along the skyline who then shamed us into a return to the top and a visit to Carlin Maggie. After a traverse to the zigzags we split up - some took the easy route along the bottom where the others were spotted 'engorsed' half way up the hill. (Names withheld to avoid embarrassment!)

Seeing as I'm effectively off season I think this counts as pre season training....although it might just be training to be a fat bastard!!!     Shaun

The Sma’ Glen  Tuesday 28th June

Just four old stalwarts made it along the picturesque glen to Newton Bridge. It was a superb, sunny evening. From there Gordie had us running west along the river before leading us into Coire Cruinn. We then embarked on a steep, vegetated and scrambly gully and this took us to near the top of Meall Dubh. Then it was on to Meall Tharsuinn which had spacious views of many of our familiar training hills. Unfortunately it also revealed the shocking extent of windfarm proliferation- all projects getting a unanimous thumbs-down from the group!

We descended into another little glen before climbing up to the north end of The Scurran. From here a very steep descent led directly to David’s car by the bridge. We were made to hurry up as the midges descended. Thinking of our last escapade into Highland Perthshire we were dubious about getting a drink anywhere. In fact at the first port of call the proprietors had retired! Gordon’s prediction that ‘there’s bound to be a pub in Methven’ proved correct, and what’s more it served Guinness!

Donalds daft daunder!

I looked at the weather forecast on Wednesday to find a rare good day ahead. With a bit of time off due and an obsession eating away at me I decided to head for the hills. I have a handful of munros to complete a round. This is something that I have been working for 30 years now and I just want to finish so I can start enjoying hills again! Getting to the top of them has involved walking, climbing, ski-ing, biking, paddling, running and on Friday driving.........
First up was Sgor na h Ulaidh in Glencoe. Straightforward enough we did an anti-clockwise traverse of the hill. We - myself and Rhubarb - got pretty hot and mildly distracted on the way up. This involved a slight belay pitch for the dog on the lead as she had decided not to take the shortest root to the top. The view from the top was absolutely superb - from the Ben to the North and the whole of the Glencoe ridge network closer to hand. Marvellous.
Next was a drive north before a scamper up Beinn Sgritheall. This is a truly majestic hill rising steeply from the shores of Loch Hourn. Arnisdale is a great little place on a bright June afternoon. The views again were spectacular with a westerly wind blowing clouds around partially obscuring views of Skye and Rhum. The route I took was direct - up then down.......steep and a good scree slope at the top. I will certainly return.

When I arrived back in Kettle the stats did not look good - 5 hours on the hill, 9 hours driving and an hour at changeover. 388 miles, 3 cheese rolls, lots of cola bottle sweeties, 4 litres of water a couple of apples and half the tunes on the Ipod were all consumed.

The payback(running time vs travel time) for this adventure was slightly better than Jura but nowhere near as good as an evening in the Lomonds! Only a few more to go and then I might be cured of my current obsession.

  Moncrieff Hill   21st June

Dreich sums it up!  Rain never stopped, tops hidden in cloud,  views nil but as always the crack and the company made it worth the effort. Up at the top we were puzzled by a tarpaulin stretched out almost flat on the sodden grass. Brian looked underneath and said there was somebody underneath. A typical Brian Wind up - we all thought. I thought I would look under and pretend to talk to the imaginary 'happy campers' - I was gobsmacked to find two young Germans! And we thought we were mad!

On the way down we met Fraser still buzzing from his great 20hr12 WHW run. Back at the pub he made it sound too easy - but we weren't fooled!

Congrats to Brian on Thurs when he joins the ranks of the supervets and Alan who is clinging by his fingertips to the end of the SV diving board.

   Auchnafree  14th June

This wis Gordies brainchild - Auchnawhere? was our first thought. Well done Gordon! it turned out to be an excellent venue in brilliant surroundings. The six of us met up at the Glenturret dam on a beautiful night. We jogged half way along the loch then turned up a few zig-zags to a tough section of steep heather. Eventually the gradient eased and we crossed to a track that led us to the top. On a fine evening the views ranged from the high cairngorms to the Lomonds. We took a direct descent back to the loch and the track back to the cars. Somehow we managed to lose Pat who had missed the turn off to the carpark. Once he was located and verbally abused we hurried down to the Pretoria bar in Crieff for a debriefing.

  Falkland   7th June

Some, weary from border raids and even the lame, astride their bikes, gathered cheerily on more familiar territory. There had been thunderstorms and floods an hour before but all the action was spent by now. Rudderless (Laurie was running with the grandchildren) we waited for phoned instructions from Mr Refill but when none arrived Gordie eventually stepped up and led us along to the estate and up the wee track to the monument. The mood was relaxed on what was now a fine evening as we continued on to the Maiden castle  and along to East Lomond. Back at the pub we were enjoying trying not to wind Fraser up too much about the WHW when the phantom Postie arrived from yet another solo saunter from Glenrothes???

Gordie's magic mystery marlyn!   May 31st

For most of us this was a first. We parked at Little Glen Shee and set off up past a quarry for Creag na Criche (the marlyn - a hill with a drop of 150m all round). A decent track led across the moor to a fine cairn and then on to Craig gibbon with its mysterious obelisk. On a fine night we sat and soaked up the fine views over to the Sidlaws and Lomonds - always good to see familiar places from another viewpoint! We opted for the alternative way back but someone suggested a short cut - it was messy to say the least. Back on the track we jogged past a wee lochan and soon got back to the cars. There was no doubt that Jasper enjoyed the night most - he looked like a dog on a mission! Needless to say we were all thirsty by now but perhaps they had been tipped off that the Lomies were in the area. After the Bankfoot Inn and the Luncarty Inn were closed we gave up and headed for home. (Gordie, Alan and Pat did manage a beverage at the Beinn Inn.)

    Alva  May24th

Quite a few missing tonight but we still had a decent number for this superb scenic saunter up Alva Glen. Richard had again set off early with his dickie leg and we maybe spotted him on Gengie (but some thought it was a sheep!). The rest of us  meandered up the glen with a diversion to see the impressive waterfall. Up at the head of the glen we climbed the central shoulder and then came down the eastern ridge towards the Nebit. Fraser was getting a few useful tips for the WHW like  book a bednight in the  Belfort!  No-one seemed too keen to push it tonight and we ended with superb views up towards the Wallace monument.  Alan

Yetholm?

Our Swedish friend Jan is making his annual pilgrimage and planning to have a few days in Islay and then the 4th-5th June in Edinburgh with a trip down for the yetholm race on the sunday. Anyone planning to go - if you let me know we can plan to meet up with Jan.

Just had an email from  Sandra Davidson who is organising a Well green (S'well) to Munduff hill race (The Golf ball!) on Sat 18th June starting at 2.20. Part of the local gala. If you are interested you can phone her on 07900 196742 for an entry form

    Gateside 17th May

A reasonable turnout considering some were going to Kinnoul. Richard again set off early with Alan chasing (but Richard disappeared into the mists). With the farmer on the prowl to protect his new lambs the dogs were left behind. (shooting the owner might be better idea!) We all  more or less came together on the windblown summit of the West. Fraser and Stephen appeared - 'where is the water tank anyway?'  Alan and Richard took the easy way down to discuss retirement plans and the rest took a circuitous route down the rocky gully and then back up and down Cation's gully. Back in the Gateside happily supping guinness Derek turned up from his bike ride and we tried on the new vests - Gordon told us to get as many as we wanted - are you ok Gordie?  Pat made one of his theatrical entrances having crossed the Lomonds on foot by some fathomless route .

    Ben Vrackie  10th May

Gathering at the car park we discovered  BrianM towelling down - he'd already been up the hill (Kelty time!!)  Richard had already set off earlier with his stick - maybe training for retirement! The rest of us (welcome to Stephen Noble) jogged steadily up to the loch (although Gordie was 'Cateraned') where we got stuck into the steep 1000foot climb into the clouds. On the way up we passed Richard on the way down. Gordie persuaded Fraser and I to try the steep face but we quickly lost sight of each other scrambling up bits of scree and round rocky corners. Fortunately we all found each other at the top but in the gale force winds and rain it was no place to linger. In minutes we were back to the loch enjoying the atmospheric views. Donald must have had enough of the snails pace and bounded off with the other youngsters to take in another hill. As always the Moulin Inn gave us a very pleasant end to the evening. Alan displayed the design for the new vest which met with universal approval.

   Creag Mead  3rd May

While the Yellow scarfers were psyching themselves up for DumbYat the fun runners were mingling at Mead on a beautiful night. We opted for an easy wander across to the Maiden and then down to the monument. For a big treat we let Jabbers lead us down the wee track through the woods down to the farm and then up the psycho track to  Falkland hill. A jog back along to Creag Mead and refreshment in the Lomond watching M United make it to the final rounded off a very enjoyable evening.

Meanwhile - David was along the road celebrating joining the growing ranks of our supervets - congratulations!

   Deuchary Hill  26th April

We had a fine evening for this favourite run and welcomed newcomers Angela and Adrian. The slow party got a bit of a start but were soon caught by the others and made our way to the summit. After a bit of a wait to enjoy the fine views Laurie's latecomers arrived from the other car park. Pat made his usual dramatic entrance with a blast of his vuvu and placing what looked like a crib containing a choco egg on the cairn. We declined the offer to partake - where had he carried it? A good run down the wee path on the north side and then a steady pull back along the main track took us back to the comforts of the Taybank hotel in Dunkeld.

   Scotlandwell  19th April

Most of the Sutherlanders made it tonight looking less wiped out than after past training weekends - probably shorter runs than usual but it may have been the pub that had never opened! Tonight we set off on the grand tour of all the nooks and crannies of the Bishop that some had never seen before. After an entertaining scramble over Kinneston crags we edged along the woods and then sneaked up the backside of the Bishop. After a sit down we trotted back across the moor to White Craig taking in a quarry or two and then at the stile turned steeply down the edge of the dyke to the Tetley trail.

Back at the Inn Gordon enthusiastically opened his 'Uig' campaign for next year training weekend.

Best wishes to Jean who is recovering from a rapid descent of the north face of a kitchen chair!

   Benarty 12th April

After we had given Andy a ritual ribbing for joining our growing band of sports car 'posers' a total of 16 of us set off for Vane farm where a pleasant run up the tracks took us to the open hill. Gordy led us up a little gully in the crags which took us to the ridge. With the sun setting ahead we enjoyed a relaxed run along the fine ridge to our traditional little hollow at the west end with magnificent views along the Ochils. The main excitement was Derek's electrifying brush with the electric fence - luckily it was only his hand! After a good chinwag Gordy again took the lead and took us on a steep traverse where we again risked electrocution on the fence. This time we took the direct line back to the car park. 'Taking the waters' at the Well inn rounded off a fine evening.

   Tillicoultry  5th April

Chatting on the mobile to Carron asking me "Who's there tonight?" After informing her of the 3 hares and 3 hounds she went on in a concerned manner "how will you keep up?"... Good point I mused.

A late call to Derek from Jean et al at Benarty wondering where we were confirmed our newcomers have now passed the Lomie induction test of managing to balls up the easiest of arrangements. "Shall we go up the Glen?" Gordie says chirpily. Hold on I told him Rosy will have had instructions and so we ignored Gordies's protestations and followed Rosy on the route up Ben Ever obviously well briefed by her master before going on holiday. It turned increasingly dreich but very refreshing. From Ben Ever we motored on towards Ben Cleuch noticing finally that Rose was missing so we retraced our steps and fortunately came across her looking as though she thought she would be on Ben Ever forever! So Ben cleuch The Law and down Gordie and Derek losing shoes in bogs on the way.

To the pub and a pleasant pint of real ale and bonhomie with topics as diverse as meteorites, tsunamis, vulgar text messaging and Dr Jablonski's dealings with the tax man.

    Cleish 29th March

Normal parking had been disrupted by ditches dug to deter any dastardly deeds  but eventually we all gathered down at the loch. Maybe it was the exertions of the weekend but the mood was very relaxed and we set off to traverse the Innians with frequent stops for 'pow wows' before Cleish expert Gordie led us down  into the forest for the long trail round to the top beyond Dumglow. A short steep climb took us up to Dumglow where we stopped for yet another rest/chinwag  and to admire the great views along the Ochils and back to the Lomonds.

Back at No 1 Goth in Kelty we enjoyed free pies and tried to come up with a cunning plan for the training weekend. Brian managed to derail us by coming up with a plan to canoe along to Suilven until we realised he wasn't even coming along!  See the 'Events'  page for what we decided.

     Birnam 22nd March

It was good to get away from our 'Bermuda triangle' of West Lomond and a decent crowd enjoyed a relaxed saunter round the Birnam hill race circuit with plenty of stops to enjoy the clear skies and night views. The most exciting bit of the evening was doing the usual route in reverse. This year our last Winter run was very kind to us but remember last year's first run of the summer along Benarty in a full on blizzard!

   Glen Vale  15th March

Epic - is the only word to describe tonight's foray or as Gus put it, "that was an interesting way down!"

The advance party of Joe and Pat set off at a brisk trot up the Glen and by the time the 'slowcoaches' and 'hot shots' met at Glen Vale they were greeted by a phantom flasher and a great banging of bodrans from the Pulpit (guess who?). We stopped for the usual photoshoot - (ie Paddy banging the drum!) and then continued up the slippery snow slopes to the summit of West Lomond where the moon appeared and we found ourselves above the clouds.

We started off retracing our steps and had a great slide down the steepest slope but then things went awry. A fence appeared where there shouldn't have been one. Laurie and his followers jumped over and disappeared down into the darkness - visions of the 'lost legion'! The appearance of trees gave Laurie a shock and they realised they were a long way from where they thought. Meanwhile the tailenders had turned left at the fence and reached the far end of the trees where the fence turns down. They decided to descend beside the fence and were relieved to see the lights of Laurie's bunch traversing along above the trees. Reunited we made our way down the steep gully where Jim managed to slice his finger badly on a metal post. To get back to the cars we followed the tree-line down and then cut left across the moor to rejoin the track.

Back in the Gateside spirits were high as we enjoyed our pint and attempted to draw up a draft summer calendar
