Lomond of Fife race

Sun 21st Aug  Entries £5 - over18

New Lomonds of Fife route – apologies for changing the race again but insoluble parking problems have meant a complete rethink. Now the race is based from the hall at Strathmiglo. The new route is shorter but keeps the best bits from before!

Park at the hall or safely nearby. Entries on the day close at 12.30pm. Race starts 1pm. You will need full body cover and map and compass.  (maps will be available at the race)

The start and finish is approx 2km (walk/jog/bike) up the tarred track that runs south towards the hills (GR213081).

From the start cross the forestry road. Straight ahead on the small forest track. After 500m turn left on the forestry road (the next section follows the previous route as far as East Lomond and back to the Maiden castle)  Take the forestry road past the hairpin bend and 700m further on turn right up the small marked track below the monument. This section through the woods will be well marked. Pass the monument. Take the track behind the monument for 200m. Turn left on the forestry track. Follow the track as it bends right and then left. Further on take a small marked track on the right. A small climb takes you to a fence. Cross the fence and cross a clearing to a stile and another track in a newer plantation. Leave the trees by another stile and 200m ahead reach the water station at a gap in the wall. Turn left. Cross the road (marshalls). Track to East Lomond (checkpoint1) and return. Back to water station. Through gap and follow small track past trees to Maiden castle (Checkpoint 2 - 222069)

Now drop off the west end of the Maiden and pick up a small track which traverses round towards West Lomond keeping the trees a few hundred meters on your right. Reach a gap in a wall with a gate (Checkpoint3 - 205072) Cross gate and turning slightly up and left pick up a small track passing some small quarry workings. This takes you round to a rocky gully. Climb the gully and then up to West Lomond. (marshalls). Take the track heading west from the top. Branch left after 200m. Reach the fence (marshall). Descend a steep grassy gully. Good luck!  Round the Bannet Stane (189071 - checkpoint 4). Climb back up left to a fence (original ascent). Follow it to a stile. Follow a grassy track and cut off it left to a stream source (checkpoint5 195071).

Make a descending traverse back to the gate entering the woods (204075). Go 300m ahead then turn right up the forestry track. After about700m turn left down the small marked track to join the original ascent track and back to the start/finish.

Back to the hall for refreshments and the prizegiving!
